Sarcopenia and Strength Training | Why Building Muscle Matters

Sarcopenia and Strength Training: Why Building Muscle Is One of the Best Investments You Can Make

Most people have never heard the word sarcopenia, but nearly everyone will experience it to some degree as they age.

Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle mass, strength, and physical function that naturally occurs over time. While it’s a normal part of aging, it doesn’t mean losing your independence is inevitable.

The encouraging news is that strength training is one of the most effective ways to help slow the progression of sarcopenia and maintain the strength you need for everyday life.

At Kato Athletic in Mankato, we believe strength isn’t just about lifting heavier weights—it’s about living a healthier, more active life for years to come. katoathletic.com

What Is Sarcopenia?

Beginning as early as our 30s, adults naturally start to lose muscle mass. Without regular resistance exercise, that loss can gradually accelerate over the years.

Sarcopenia can make everyday activities more difficult, including:

  • Carrying groceries
  • Climbing stairs
  • Getting up from the floor
  • Lifting grandchildren
  • Maintaining balance
  • Staying active and independent

According to the National Institute on Aging, staying physically active—especially through resistance training—is one of the most effective ways to support healthy aging.

Why Strength Training Is So Important

Many people associate lifting weights with bodybuilding or competitive athletes.

In reality, strength training is one of the best forms of exercise for adults of every age.

Regular strength training can help:

Maintain Muscle Mass

Resistance training signals your body to preserve and build lean muscle, helping offset the natural muscle loss associated with aging.

Improve Bone Health

Strength training places healthy stress on bones, supporting bone density and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Improve Balance and Stability

Building stronger muscles helps improve coordination and stability, reducing the likelihood of falls.

Make Everyday Life Easier

Simple daily activities become easier when you’re stronger.

Whether you’re carrying laundry, picking up your child, gardening, or moving furniture, functional strength improves your quality of life.

Strength Training Is for Everyone

One of the biggest misconceptions about strength training is that you need to be in great shape before you begin.

At Kato Athletic, we work with people of all fitness levels.

Whether you’re:

  • New to exercise
  • Returning after years away
  • Recovering your strength
  • Looking to stay active as you age

our programs can be scaled to meet you where you are today.

It’s Never Too Early—or Too Late—to Start

Muscle is something we naturally lose if we don’t challenge it—but it’s also something we can continue to build and maintain throughout life.

Research consistently shows that adults can improve strength, balance, and mobility through regular resistance training, even later in life.

The best time to start was years ago.

The second-best time is today. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK560813/
